- Trade Protection arrived on 16 July 2025 and is enabled for CS2 items by default.
- For 7 days a received item cannot be traded on, sold on the Market, modified or moved to storage.
- The rollback is all or nothing: every protected trade from the past 7 days is reversed.
- The price of a rollback is 30 days without trading or the Steam Market, including the removal of all listings.
- Since June 2026 items unlock exactly 168 hours after being received.
On 16 July 2025 Valve shipped an update that changed Counter-Strike 2 trading more than anything else in a decade. Trades became reversible: if an account is stolen, the items can be brought back. The price for that is a seven-day protected status on everything you receive, plus strict conditions on the rollback.
What Trade Protection is
Trade Protection is a Steam security mechanic that gives CS2 items received in a trade a temporary protected status. In the interface such items are marked with a shield icon. For Counter-Strike 2 the feature is enabled by default and cannot be switched off in settings.
What you can and cannot do with a protected item
You can
- Use the skin in game immediately after the trade
- Inspect the item and check its float
- See the exact time protection lifts in your inventory
- Trade your other, unprotected items
You cannot
- Pass the item on to another user
- List it on the Steam Community Market
- Apply or scrape off a sticker
- Put it into a Storage Unit
- Use it in a trade-up contract
How a trade rollback works
The rollback is designed as a tool for hacking victims, which is why it is deliberately inconvenient for ordinary deals.
-
Regain control of the account
Change the password, revoke the API key, deauthorise devices. Without this a rollback is pointless: the items will be taken again.
-
Start the trade rollback
The feature is available in Steam for trades made in the last 7 days that involved protected items.
-
Every trade in the window is reversed
The mechanic is all or nothing: you cannot pick a single trade. Honest deals from that week are cancelled too.
-
The account receives a restriction
30 days without trading and the Steam Community Market; all active listings and offers are removed.
What changed in June 2026
A year after launch Valve refined how the timers are calculated. Previously every locked item unlocked at the same time, at a shared daily reset, which gave the market a daily wave of sell-offs. The countdown is now individual.
- An item is released exactly 168 hours after it enters the inventory.
- The unlock time matches the time of receipt, to the hour.
- Unlocks are spread across the day rather than bunched into one peak.
- The market grew calmer: there are no more scheduled mass price drops.
How it reshaped the skin market
The first months after launch were painful: trade volumes fell, liquidity dropped, and fast “buy and flip within an hour” trading ceased to exist as a phenomenon. Platforms adapted — some moved to a P2P model, some expanded their warehouse stock, and spreads on instant trades widened.
Instant flipping died, but safety improved: for the first time in CS history a stolen inventory could be recovered without a support ticket. The main outcome of the 2025–2026 trading reform
Trade Protection and trade lock are not the same thing
| Property | Trade Protection | Trade lock (hard lock) |
|---|---|---|
| When it appears | The item was received in a trade | Market purchase, case, store |
| Duration | 7 days | 7 days |
| Can the deal be reversed | Yes, by rollback within 7 days | No |
| Use in game | Available | Available |
| Selling on the Market | Not allowed | Not allowed |
How to live with trade protection
- Plan deals ahead. If a skin is meant for a further trade, budget a week for protection to lift.
- Check the timer in your inventory. Steam shows the exact unlock time when you hover over an item.
- Do not fall for “protection removal”. The mechanic cannot be bypassed — every such offer is a scam.
- Keep the account secure. The best way never to need a rollback is a mobile authenticator and attention when confirming trades.
How to spot a theft attempt before a rollback becomes necessary is covered in our detailed guide to safe CS2 skin trading.
Frequently asked questions
Can Trade Protection be turned off?
No. For Counter-Strike 2 items the protection is on by default and cannot be disabled in account settings.
Can I roll back just one trade?
No. The mechanic is all or nothing: every trade involving protected items over the last 7 days is reversed, honest deals included.
What happens to the account after a rollback?
The account receives a 30-day restriction on trading and the Steam Community Market, and active listings and offers are removed.
Can I use a protected skin in game?
Yes, the item is available in game immediately. The restriction only covers transferring, selling, applying stickers and moving it to storage.
