How to trade skins in CS2

Trading CS2 skins is not a “sale” — it is a direct swap of items between inventories. We walk through the whole path: from preparing your Steam account to confirming the trade in the mobile authenticator and waiting out the seven-day protection.

Key takeaways
  • Trading requires an active Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator — without it items leave with a delay of up to 15 days.
  • Third-party services only ever get your Trade URL, never your login and password.
  • After a trade the skin you received is Trade Protected for 7 days: you can play with it, but you cannot pass it on.
  • Every offer is confirmed in the Steam mobile app — that is where you check the items.

Trading skins in CS2 is simpler than it looks: you hand over items from your Steam inventory and receive others in return. No money transfers, no “topping up a balance” — just two inventories and a confirmation. The complexity lives in the details: the trade link, the mobile authenticator, seven-day locks and rules that Valve has tightened noticeably over the past eighteen months.

Below is the full route: what to prepare on your account, how a trade works through a third-party service such as Crazer, what a direct trade with another player looks like and what happens to the item afterwards.

What you need to trade skins in CS2

Steam does not let every account trade — it is a defence against bot farms and scammers. Before your first deal, make sure four conditions are met.

  • The account is not limited. While the profile carries Limited User status, trading and the Steam Market are unavailable. It is lifted by a single Steam purchase of $5 or more (or the equivalent).
  • The Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator has been active for at least 7 days. Without it Steam holds outgoing items for up to 15 days, and the deal effectively turns into a two-week wait.
  • The inventory is public. In privacy settings the inventory must be public, otherwise the service cannot see your items.
  • You have a Trade URL. This is a link of the form steamcommunity.com/tradeoffer/new/?partner=…&token=… that offers are sent to.

How to trade skins through a trading service

A trading service is a warehouse of items plus a set of Steam trading bots. You pick what you want to receive, hand over your skins, and the bot sends you an ordinary trade offer. The whole process takes a couple of minutes.

  1. Sign in through Steam

Authorisation goes through the official Steam OpenID form. The service only receives your public SteamID and never sees your password or Steam Guard codes.

  2. Paste your Trade URL

The trade link is copied once from your Steam inventory settings. It lets the bot send you an offer without being on your friend list.

  3. Build the trade basket

Your items are on the left, what you want to receive is on the right. The service shows the value difference straight away: close it by adding another skin or topping up.

  4. Accept the trade offer

The offer arrives in Steam. Open it and check the contents: what is leaving, what is arriving and which account it came from.

  5. Confirm the deal in the mobile app

The final step is confirmation in Steam Guard. This screen is where you check the item list one more time: it is the last point at which the trade can be stopped.

How to trade skins directly with another player

A direct trade between two people works without intermediaries, but it demands trust and attention — once confirmed, nothing brings the item back except rolling back every trade of the week.

  1. Open the trade window

Through a friend's profile (“Offer a trade”) or via their Trade URL if you are not friends.

  2. Drag the items across

Select Counter-Strike 2 and move the skins into the trade window. A single trade allows up to 250 items on each side.

  3. Check the wear grade and float

Item names match, wear values do not. Make sure you are being offered exactly the copy you agreed on.

  4. Send and confirm

Once sent, the offer waits for confirmation in the mobile app on both sides.

What happens to a skin after a trade

Since July 2025 every CS2 item received in a trade falls under Trade Protection. This is the key change that many newcomers mistake for a service error.

7 daysthe item is protected after a trade
168 hexact countdown from the moment of receipt
30 daystrading ban after a trade rollback

While protection is active the skin remains yours and is available in game, but it cannot be passed on, listed on the Steam Market, moved to storage or modified with stickers. Since June 2026 the unlock no longer happens at a shared daily reset but exactly 168 hours after receipt — accurate to the hour of the deal.

Common trading mistakes

  • Confirming a trade without looking. Scam schemes rely on exactly this autopilot: the item list is substituted and the user hits “confirm” out of habit.
  • Pricing from the Steam Market. Steam prices are wallet prices and include a fee of about 15 %. An item's real trade value always sits closer to third-party platform prices.
  • Ignoring liquidity. A rare item from an unpopular collection is hard to trade at a “fair” price: you will end up covering the difference.
  • Trading your whole inventory at once. It is sensible to keep your first trade on a new service small — that way you test the speed and the valuation without risk.

How to work out whether a trade is worth it

Trading has no fee in the usual sense — it has a spread: the difference between the price at which the platform takes your item and the price at which it gives up its own. A simple check tells you whether the deal is good.

What to compareWhere to lookWhat to watch for
Total of what you givePrices across several platformsDo not treat Steam prices as the benchmark — the fee inflates them
Price of the targetThe same platform plus alternativesCompare float and stickers: they move the price
SpreadThe difference between the totalsA few per cent is normal for an instant trade
LiquidityNumber of listings on the marketThe rarer the item, the more the trade costs you
A quick worth-it check before confirming a trade

Counted honestly, trading almost always beats the “sell for money → buy something new” route: you do not pay twice for conversion and you do not lose on platform fees. A detailed comparison is in Trading, selling or the Steam Market.

Frequently asked questions

How long does trading skins in CS2 take?

The trade itself takes seconds: the service bot sends an offer, you confirm it in the mobile authenticator and the items change hands. Waiting only appears where Trade Protection or a trade hold applies: the item you received cannot be passed on for another 7 days.

Do I need Steam Guard to trade?

Yes. The Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator must have been active for at least 7 consecutive days. Otherwise Steam holds outgoing items for up to 15 days, and most services will not accept such a trade.

Can I trade skins without signing in to Steam on a third-party site?

Yes, and that is the safest way: a service only needs your Trade URL and a public inventory. Your login, password and Steam Guard codes belong to Steam alone.

What should I do if the trade offer never arrives?

Check that your inventory is public, that the trade link has not been replaced, that there is no trade ban on the account, and that you are not under restrictions after a password or device change.
